Process abstraction

this simple abstraction is about 2.5 hours worth of work.

I have been putting together my portfolio for my new site and was pulling files from my old MBP.

The graphics card is bad and when I was compositing into the new file the computer froze.
Instead of getting a corrupt .psd cant open type of problem I get a nice abstraction.

The trickhouse.org mashup project launches

The trickhouse.org mashup project takes flexible geography and newspaceproject and creates a new way to experience both projects.
The site is being launched as part of Scott Keen’s Trickhouse guest curation for volume 6.

newspaceproject is dedicated to the development of interactive experimental projects since 2000.

The launch of the fall edition of the site is just the starting point for this particular mashup project.
It will continue to evolve with further developments of both projects and now the inclusion of the Trickhouse audience.

Using a flash video interface the project takes the video and images created as the result of this past year’s collaboration between Scott Keen, Cyndi Gusler and Greg Stewart and the various
other projects and involvement of Scott Keen’s that are either of a direct relation to the fg project(s) and not.

newspaceproject is a site created by Scott Keen that is dedicated to the development of interactive experimental
projects since 2000. The development and utilization of the site continues to be nonlinear and inconsistent. There is no typical archives. The site is not documentation.

lynda.com vs textbooks

Over the past couple of years I have been a big fan of online tutorials. I started with gotoandlearn.com and became hooked. As a visual learner I truly believe a vast majority of people out there find technical books on programming and software more of a sleep aide a than a learning tool. A couple of chapters of CSS and one is pretty much cured of any semblance of insomnia.

Recently walking through the campus library I was reminded of the other element of having things in a book format – software versions are updated every 12 to 18 months. There were books in the computer section that were windows 2000 and adobe photoshop 5.5. This is 2009 (2008 then). Granted that tutorials need to be updated but they definitely take up less room than the collection of photoshop and flash books I partially read. Any one need a flash 5 book and the use of actionscript 1?

Well as an educator of interactive design I have taken a minor step and started using Lynda.com for my students instead of using text books. When you teach intro to graphic design, web design and flash animation – a semester is really no time to get things done properly. This way I am hoping that if anything I can teach the fundamentals of good design and best practices on a personal level rather than problem solving and explaining software.

I love the whole adobe cs3 now cs4 bundle and use it enthusiastically. I am excited to take some of the technical jargon out of the class lectures.

Classes just started for spring 09 – will see how it goes. Will update this soon.

Artist Robert Rauschenberg Dies

A very sad week in the art world as artist Robert Rauschenberg died monday night.

As an early influence on me as an artist I was really taken back about the announcement on NPR.

Keith and Kathleen Mills of Laughing Dog have offered the front window displays for Scott and Julie Keen to exhibit their recent painting collaborations “21 paintings”. The series of work on display can be purchased from their site 617studios.com

The showing will coincide with the Harrisonburg First Friday Art Walk.

envirse is launched

Well the official launching of the Envirse, LLC and the envirse.com website happened today.

Even though I have been working with clients and have already several projects housed under the envirse name – I am excited to make things official.

The site is a series of sites really: flash version, iphone version and an experimental playstation portable version. Still not sure how much emphasis I am going to put into the PSP version but it is an interesting endeavor none the less. All site versions pull from the same images and and text.

I am pleased to have made these strides and look forward to running a business in the crazy design world.
